DENOSA KZN wins battle for payment of specialized nurses in the province

Media statement

Tuesday, 02 October 2018

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) in KwaZulu-Natal is pleased with the outcome of today's proceedings at the CCMA regarding the back-payment of specialized nurses dating back to 2017.

DENOSA had brought to CCMA the issue where the provincial Department of Health, through a circular, had stopped back-paying specialized nurses accordingly since 2017 from the date they obtained their qualifications, as they also start working as specialized nurses as soon as they have qualified.

The affected nurses with specialization in areas such as ICU, Theatre, Orthopaedic, Primary Health Care (PHC) and others are more than 200.

At the CCMA conciliation, which sat this morning, the Department acceded to the demands of DENOSA and has offered to correct this issue and back-pay all affected specialized nurses accordingly.

From today until 11 October, DENOSA will be collating a list of all affected nurses for submission to the Department, so that payment could be effected.

DENOSA calls on all nurses who obtained specialization since 2017 to contact their DENOSA shop stewards at institutions, or contact DENOSA Provincial Office on 031 305 1417.

"We view this settlement agreement as a victory for our nurses," says DENOSA Provincial Secretary, Mandla Shabangu.

"We are pleased that the Department has undertaken to implement this within this month."
