The DENOSA National Learner Movement held its second meeting for the year at the DENOSA head office in Pretoria from 12 to 13 July 2014, where a number of pertinent issues for students were discussed robustly.
Issues under robust deliberations at the two-day meeting included the bursary system as the funding model for nursing education. Since the introduction of the system in some provinces, students have encountered a number of challenges pertaining to insufficient resources. The problems have even led to a strike at the Mmabatho Nursing College, leading to the ultimate closure of the institution mainly as a result of insufficient transporting system. All provinces in the meeting pledge their full support top the struggle by students at the college, and committed to look into providing physical support to the province in everyway possible.
Another issue raised sharply in the meeting was the high rate of failure by students, which in large part pointed to ineffective students support programmes at institutions. The structure called for student affairs divisions at institutions to look into the matter and change their approach for better.
