FREE STATE/NORTHERN CAPE NURSE EDUCATORS TB.MDR AND HIV AIDS WORKSHOP REPORT

1: INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

The Free State Provincial Secretary (PS), Ms. Veronica Fransman-Hendricks welcomed everyone to the
sixth of the seven workshops due to be completed by May 2013. She gave a special address to the
participants providing background on the vision, mission values and objectives of DENOSA as well as the unfolding activities, i.e., the Marilyn Lahana nominations submission, the International Nurses Day (IND) and the Second Nurses Conference and changing nursing practice landscape. She coached and encourages nurses to start being capacitated, assertive and true advocates to the profession, standing against empty Doctor Compliance syndrome and being specific and relevant, avoiding phrases such as “a pinch of salt” to lower patient’s blood pressure”. She reflected on the DENOSA survey questionnaires in order to promote services of DENOSA members. The questionnaires were distributed to participants forcompletion by Friday.

The DENOSA Professional Institute (DPI) coordinator Mr. Sipho Khoza provided a brief background and purpose of the workshop, the funding source and the rolex replica watches details on the administration and implementation by University Research Council (URC) and DENOSA. The intention is to train two hundred (200) nurse educators in the country from Nursing Colleges, Universities, Private sector Institutions and Military Colleges in all nine provinces. To date 107 participants from varied institutions in seven provinces excluding Free State and North West have been trained. The Provincial TB MDR Manager, Ms. Sonja Van der Merwe gave a presentation on the current background, achievements and challenges in the province. DPI coordinator Ms. T Kgongwana was a program director for the four days of the workshop, responsible for the opening and closing in between and at end of the day sessions as well as concluding each presentation.

The participants were represented as follows from various institutions:
 Twenty four nurse educators from Free State Nursing College and sub campuses across the province;
 Two clinical facilitators from Medi-clinic Bloemfontein Hospital;
 Five senior registered nurses from Correctional services;(2 Free State and Three Northern Cape)
 Eight nurse educators from Northern Cape Henrietta Stockdale Nursing College(Northern Cape)
 Two clinical preceptors from the University of the Free State.
